Dinosaur Yoga Poses that Kids Love (with sing-along songs!)

Are your little ones interested in all-things dinosaur, and far surpass your own knowledge of extensive dino-facts? We’re not surprised!

Children — preschoolers, especially — love learning about these prehistoric creatures and using their imaginations to illustrate what dinosaurs might’ve been like. Just as big construction trucks and outer space facts spark a child’s wonder, so do dinosaurs.

At Yo Re Mi we totally believe in listening to kids’ ideas and letting their imaginations take the lead, and dinosaur yoga is one of them. If you want to try dinosaur yoga in your own classroom or home settings, we have a few dinosaur musical yoga activities for children that will keep them stretching, singing and learning.

Dinosaur Yoga Poses for Kids

Whether an educational supplement to the Dinosaur segment of your science class, a fun brain break after a long day of school or screen time, or just a way to fulfill your child’s love for these creatures that once roamed the earth — here are dinosaur yoga poses kids love!

Go Back in Time with Upward Salute Pose

A fun way to get started with dinosaur yoga is to discuss the concept of time. Dinosaurs roamed the earth millions of years ago! Get stretching and elongate your spine with upward salute pose, using our “Clock” song below to explore time, minutes, hours, and even millions of years.

Conversation Starters for Dinosaur Yoga:

  • How long has each child roamed the earth (how old are you?)

  • How long have we roamed this classroom (how many days of school?)

“I'm A Dinosaur” Song with Chair Pose

Ready for some leg and core strengthening while exploring the multi-syllable names of dinosaurs?

Use our “I’m a Dinosaur” song with chair pose and you’ll have kids sitting low, reaching high, and shaking out their wiggles! Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, Pterodactyl, and Velociraptor; there are so many kinds of dinosaurs that we can make!

“Teeny Tiny Dinosaur” Song with Warrior One

One reason why we love combining music and movement is because it makes developing motor and language skills fun!

Not only is this “Teeny Tiny Dinosaur” song hilarious, it also helps us explore high, medium and low pitch while encouraging fine and gross movement.

“Meteor” with Fallen Triangle Pose

While this topic may require adjusting the tone for age-appropriate conversation, “What happened to the dinosaurs?” is going to be a common question at some point, nevertheless.

There are many theories as to how dinosaurs became extinct, one of which was by an asteroid from outer space about 65 million years ago (and the effects of that collision).

Conversation starters about Dinosaur extinction:

  • What does it mean when an animal goes “extinct”?

  • Meteors are kind of like asteroids — what’s the difference? Explore meteors with fallen triangle pose

  • What other things exist in outer space? (We have a Space yoga adventure video for further learning)

“Dig In The Ground” for fossils with Goddess Pose

Everything we know about dinosaurs is thanks to the amazing work of paleontologists. They get digging for fossils and use this research and evidence to create stories and timelines that help us go back in time to better understand dinosaurs.

Continue your STEM adventure with goddess pose:

  • With every dig into the ground (searching for fossils) squat a bit lower

  • This strengthens legs, engages the core, and lengthens the spine

  • What kind of dinosaur bones did you find?

Enjoy dinosaur yoga!

We hope your children love these dinosaur yoga poses as much as we do. It is a fantastic way to get kids moving while supporting physical, cognitive and academic development.
