Apple Picking with Dan
/October Teacher Spotlight: Dan Costello
Autumn is my favorite time of year! There are so many fun traditions and, being a Scorpio, I’m excited to celebrate my birthday in October as well.
Apple Picking at Indian Ladder Farms
I love sharing fall activities with my 3 year-old son, E, and he loves being outdoors. We jump in leaves, paint pumpkins and pick kale and the last of the summer tomatoes. This weekend, we went apple picking at Indian Ladder Farms near his grandparents in Albany, NY.
There are few times a city kid is completely surrounded by trees. He zig-zagged through them, hiding behind and jumping out to surprise me. To reach the highest apples, I hoisted him onto my shoulders, and he stretched his arms way up. We were literally working together!
As we drove back home we listened to a terrific album called “Come Along Children and Sing With Me” by a relatively unknown 1960’s folk singer named Johnny Richardson. One of the best songs on this album is called “Five Little Apples On The Tree.” It’s a counting song, great for infants through kindergarten. I even covered it on one of my albums, “More Kids Songs With Dan.”
