The Best Winter Yoga Poses for Kids: Cozy and Energizing!
/Right now many families and classrooms around the world are making the most of winter! Whether bundling up in cozy winter outerwear, decorating classrooms or hallways with winter themed decor, or planning kid-friendly winter activities, adventure doesn’t stop when the temperature drops.
Not every winter day is ideal for an outdoor adventure, though. Did you know you can celebrate winter in the comfort of your own home or classroom?
We have a number of super fun, warming, and energizing winter yoga poses and activities for children that will keep them singing and moving all winter long. Thanks to our new app, we even have an exclusive winter theme yoga sequence just for kids!
Here’s a preview with a list of some of our favorite winter yoga poses:
1. Winter Yoga Warm Up
What better way to achieve winter warmth than with an energizing warm up? Two of our favorite ways to warm up during the winter are with a musical deep breathing exercise and an energizing warm up for the mind and body.
If a seated warm up yoga pose is what your family or classroom needs (or you seek an engaging warm up before safely trying more fun kids yoga poses) try this warm up with Dan to support mind/body connection.
2. Sun Dance for Winter Yoga
Embrace sunny days, even during the winter! Depending on where you live, the winter months might call for shorter days (and that means less time with the sun).
Let’s do the sun dance together as we count down to longer, warmer days. Hands up high, reach for the sky! Sun salutations help build energy and warmth as we prepare our bodies to move.
Sun dance also helps support cardiovascular health and eliminates toxins — perfect for supporting a healthy immune system. Watch our kid-friendly sun dance video with Rachel, below:
3. Head to the Snowy Mountains with Train Pose
ALL ABOARD! Seated forward fold is a great winter pose for children, as it helps improve digestion (perfect for winter comfort food), calm the nervous system, and offer a deep stretch.
This winter, let’s take the train up, up, up to the mountain so we can experience all the fun winter activities that await us. Yo Re Mi teaching artist, Isaac will help us get there:
4. Winter Animal Yoga for Kids
Some animals hibernate in the winter, while others find the snow and colder temperatures to be just fine! When winter comes, many animals adapt to the season.
Did you know snow bunnies’ winter coats are white to blend in with the snow, and then turn brown in the spring to blend in with the dirt and rocks?
Let’s sleep like bunnies in the snow…but when we wake up, don’t forget to get hopping!
What Other Animals Might Be Roaming Around?
- Have you seen a big ol' MOOSE perusing the snowy land?
- Do any of these yoga animals like the snow?
- Our teacher training can teach you animal yoga poses and more for the classroom.
5. Winter Mountain Activities for Kids
Some people love the winter for sitting by the fireplace, drinking hot cocoa, and keeping warm. Others like to put on their winter boots and have fun in the snow!
Many families love winter for its snowy sports: you can go sledding, snowshoeing, skiing and more! Lucky for yogis, a ski workout is the perfect winter yoga pose because it requires a strong chair pose. Chair pose not only energizes our bodies, it also is the perfect brain break to help us feel fierce and confident.
UH OH! Watch out for that Avalancheeee!
- Watch our avalanche video next to practice musical dynamics.
6. Go Home After a Long Winter Day (Home Song for Children)
This winter yoga adventure was just the beginning. We have a full winter yoga sequence on the Yo Re Mi app just for kids! The 23 minute video is packed with full length poses from our teaching artists, fun facts about winter, and super cool winter illustrations and imagery.
A winter day out adventuring on a mountain, with animals and fun winter activities, can be a lot of fun — but at some point we have to go home, eat supper, and jump into our jammies.
We love the sing-along Home Song for kids to say goodbye for now, while celebrating a fun winter excursion with our friends and loved ones.
There’s plenty of fun to have during winter, and these activities were just the tip of the iceberg (no pun intended!) Thanks for joining us on this winter adventure — be sure to try out the full version on our app next!
